115 Know all men by these presents that I John Van Ness Philip of the state of New York but now and for several years part a resident of the state of Maryland do hereby manumit and set free my negro slave Tom otherwise called Thomas William Henry Johnson a slave for life aged about twenty two years who was assigned to me as part of my interest in the personal estate of the late Chancellor Johnson his freedom to commence from the date of these presents Witness my hand and seal this twelfth day of June eighteen hundred and fifty seven Test W.m Glover John Van Ness Philip Hers W.
