Know all men by these presents that I John Van Ness
Philip of the state of New York but now and for several years
part a resident of the state of Maryland do hereby manumit
and set free my negro slave Tom otherwise called Thomas
William Henry Johnson a slave for life aged about twenty
two years who was assigned to me as part of my interest
in the personal estate of the late Chancellor Johnson his
freedom to commence from the date of these presents
                   Witness my hand and seal this twelfth day of
June eighteen hundred and fifty seven

State of Maryland      Anne Arundel County Sct
                            I hereby certify that on this 12th day of
June 1857 before the subscriber a justice of the Peace in and for
the state and County aforesaid personally appeared J Van
Ness Philip the party grantor in the foregoing deed of
Manumission and acknowledged the same to be his act
and deed for the purposes therein mentioned  Certified by
                                                          W.m Glover
Recorded the 13th day of June 1857

of Jas of Anne Arundel County and state of maryland
do hereby Manumit and set free my negro slave
John Shaw Forty years of age her freedom to Commence
from the date of these Presents   Witness my hand and
seal this 1.st day of august 1857

    At the foot of the aforegoing was thus written to wit
