Whereas I purchased from a certain Susanna Carter and a certain James
Walters ^Son^ a coloured boy by the name of William a slave for life aged about
five years when I purchased him refference being had to the bill sale
hereunto annexed will appear.  And being desirous to manumit and
set free the said William slave as aforesaid have this day executed
the following deed of Manumission.  To all whom it may concern be
it Known that I William Brashears of Anne Arundel County in
the state of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations me
thereunto moving have released from slavery liberated manumitted
and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery
liberate manumit and set free my  coloured Slave named
William being of the age of twenty six years and able to work
and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and him the
said coloured Man named William I do declare to be henceforth
free manumitted and discharged from all manner of service
servitude to me my executors or administrators forever  In witness
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this
sixteenth day of August eighteen hundred and fifty six

and it is hereby certified that on this sixteenth day of August in the year
of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty six before the subscriber a
Justice of the peace of the state of Maryland in and Anne Arundel
County aforesaid personly appears William Brashears he being
known to be the person who is named and described as and
professing to be a party to the foregoing deed of Manumission and
doth acknowledge the said instrument of writing to be his act and
deed.  In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name on the day
and year aforesaid

Know all men by these presents that we the subscribers for and in
consideration of sixty dollars to us in hand paid by William Brashears
