109 Maryland Anne Arundel County to wit On this 1st day of May 1856 personally appeared Stephen Beard Senr and Betty W Beard parties to the within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a justice of the peace of the state of Maryland for said County and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed for the purposes within mentioned and the negro woman within named to be henceforth manumitted and discharged from all services to them or to any claiming under them and to be free and manumitted according to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided Acknowledged before Jos Nicholson J P A A County Recorded the 11th day of April 1856 To all whom it may concern be it known that I Sophia Brice of the city of Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving as also in further consideration of one dollar current money to me in hand paid have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free my negro woman named Harriet Stepney being of the age of thirty three years and able to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance which said negro woman was sold for a term of years by Mrs Catharine S. M Ray of the City of Annapolis and state of Maryland and manumitted by her when her term of service within shall have expired which will to on the seventh day of August in the year eighteen hundred and fifty nine I do likewise hereby manumit set free and release from slavery my negro boy Richard J the child of my said negro woman Harriett of the age of eight months from and after the twenty sixth day of August in the year eighteen hundred and eighty when he will have attained the age of twenty five years and her the said woman Harriett from henceforth and him the said boy Richard from and after the aforesaid twenty sixth day of August in the year eighteen hundred and eighty. I do declare to be free |
