602 County aforesaid personally appears Job Guest he being known to me as a party to the within Instrument and acknowledges the same to be his act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned and the negroe boy therein named to be from the time therein named manumitted and discharged from all service to him or to any claiming under him and to be free and manumitted according to the act of assembly in such cases made and provided Exd Acknowledged before Wm Bryan J P 3½ Recorded the 16.th day of January 1840 This Indenture Witnesseth that I Richard Ireland Jones of the City of annapolis and State of maryland for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to me in hand paid before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have released from slavery manumitted and set free my mulatto man named Ben Simpson being thirty Eight years of age of a healthy Constitution sound in mind and body (with the exception of some of his toes lost by frost bite some years since) and Capable of labour to procure for him sufficient food and raiment with other requisite necessaries of life as far as I know at this time he having absconded ^from me some years & remonstrated to me as being^ in Canada but I believe he is [illegible] from Philadelphia & that the above sum of money is furnished by his wife &^ some other friends thro' the agency of Jeremiah Wright Esqr of the City.
