350 Justice of the peace for said county and acknowledged the above instrument of writing to be his act and deed paid Gideon White Recorded the 6th day of October 1826 Know all men by these presents that I Charles Philips of Anne Arundel County for divers good causes & considerations me thereunto moving & in further consideration of five dollars to me paid have released from slavery (if slavery they are in) manumitted & set free and by these presents do manumit and set free (as far as I have any claim on them) the following negroes who are my children to wit Margaret Phillips Charles Phillips Julian Phillips Harriet Phillips and Hannah Phillips and I do declare the said negroes so far as I have any interest in them to be from this time forever hereafter together with their issue free quit and discharged from me & my heirs. In testimony whereof I hereto set my hand and affix my seal this eleventh day of October eighteen hundred and twenty six Sealed signed & delivered in our presence Margaret his Phillips name interlined Charles + Phillips (seal) before execution & Harriet mark also interlined J J. Speed M H Price At the foot of the aforegoing Deed was thus written to wit Anne Arundel County ss on this Eleventh day of October 1826 came Charles Phillips before me a Justice of the peace for the county aforesaid & acknowledged that he executed the foregoing Instrument of (manumission) |
