142 intent and meaning paid Nicholas Worthington of Thomas Ex.d d.d 3 Recorded the 17th day of January 1820 This Indenture Witnesseth that I John Hooper of Dorchester County in the State of maryland for and in consideration of the sum of one Dollar to me in hand paid at and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have released from slavery manumitted and set free and by these presents do release from slavery manumit & set free my negro man named Benjamin Brown being under forty five years of age of a healthy Constitution sound in mind and body and Capable by labour to procure to him sufficient food and raiment with other requisite necessaries of life. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred & nineteen Signed Sealed & delivered in presence of us Henry H Urquhart John Hooper (seal) John Lee On the back of the aforegoing deed was thus written to wit: anne arundel County to wit: On this 24th day of December 1819 Personally appears John Hooper party to within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace of the State of maryland for the said County and acknowledges the same to be his act and deed for the purposes within mentioned and the negro man within named to be henceforth manumitted and discharged from all services to him or to any claiming under him and to (be) |
