71 and affixed my seal this 26.th day of april one thousand eight hundred and nine witness present Mary Cowman (seal) Geo P Darrympll Ann Tongue on the back of the foregoing was thus endorsed to wit on the twenty sixth day of april 1809 personally appeared before me the Subscriber one of the Justices of the peace for the county aforesaid Mary Cowman party to the above instrument of writing who acknowledged the same to be her act and deed and the signature and seal thereto annexed to be respectively Tho.s Tongue Recorded the 28th day of april 1809 To all whom it may concern be it known that I John Chew of ann arundel county and state of maryland for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving as also in further consideration of five shillings current money to me in hand paid have released from slavery liberated manumitted and sett free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumit and set free my negro man named James being of the age of forty three years and able to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and him the said negro man named James I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my executors administrators or assigns forever In testimony whereof I have sett my hand & seal this ninth day of June eighteen hundred & nine signed sealed & delivered in presence of John Chew (seal) Gideon White |
