359 To all whom it may concern, Be it known that I Basil Shephard of the City of Annapolis in the State of maryland for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving as also in further consideration of five dollars Current money to me in hand paid have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumit and set free my negro woman named Betty being of the age of thirty years and able to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance to be free from and after the first day of August one thousand Eight hundred and twenty seven and also her two Children Jack aged about six years to be free from and after the first day of August one thousand Eight hundred and thirty seven Jem aged about one year to be free from and after the first day of august one thousand Eight hundred and forty and them the said negroes Betty Jack and Jem I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me my Executors or administrators forever from and after the periods above mentioned. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty seventh day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and sixteen Signed Sealed and delivered in the presence of Basil Shepherd (seal) Frederick Harwood George McNeir On the back of the aforegoing was thus written to wit: Received on the day of the date within mentioned the sum of five dollars Current money it being the full consideration money within mentioned Witness Basil Shephard George McNeir Anne |
