    in the presence of Robt Boone

          Maryland A. A. County to wit.

    On this twenty first day of February 1845 before me one of the
Justices of the peace in and for said County appears Walter Pumphrey
and acknowledges the foregoing writing to be his act and according to the
true intent and meaning thereof and the act of Assembly in such case
made and provided

Recorded the 18.th day of March 1845


       Know all men by these presents that I Elijah R. Arnold of Anne
Arundel County in the State of Maryland for and in consideration of the
sum of one hundred and seventy dollars current money to me in hand paid by
Richard Gardiner of said County and state at and before the sealing and
delivery of these presents the receipt whereof I the said Elijah R. Arnold
do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do
grant bargain and sell unto the said Richard Gardner his executors administrators
and assigns one negro woman Rachel aged sixteen years on the eighteenth
day of December eighteen hundred and forty four last to remain in servitude
until she the said Rachel shall arrive at the age of thirty years.  To Have
and to hold the said negro woman Rachel as above bargained and sold or
mentioned and intended so to be to the said Richard Gardner his executors
administrators and assigns and I the said Elijah R. Arnold for myself my heirs
executors and administrators the said Negro Rachel unto the said Richard
Gardiner his executors administrators and assigns against me the said
Elijah R. Arnold my executors and administrators and against all and every
other person or persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and defend by
these presents I the said Elijah R. Arnold have put the said Richard
Gardnier in full possession by delivering to him the said Richard Gardner
the said negro woman Rachel at the sealing and delivering of these presents
in the name of the whole premises hereby bargained and sold or mentioned
and intended to hers unto him the said Richard Gardiner as aforesaid

       In Witness whereof we have hereunto affixed our hands and seals in this
19.th day of March 1845                                       Elijah R. Arnold   (seal)
At the foot of the foregoing was thus written to wit   Richard Gardiner   (seal)

                   Anne Arundel County Sct.

Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that on this 22.nd day of March 1845
before the Subscriber a justice of the peace in and for said State and County
personally appear Elijah R. Arnold and Richard Gardner being known to me
