309 us in hand paid by Archibald Hodges of the County and state aforesaid at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledge have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Archibald Hodges his heirs executors administrators and assigns one negro woman named "Charlotte" aged about twenty eight years and to be free at the age of thirty five years on the fifth day of October eighteen hundred and fifty five of the property of Robert Boone late of the City of Baltimore deceased as a slave for the term above mentioned and thereafter to be free and discharged from all servitude agreeably to the form and effect of the last will and testament of Mary Johnson ^late^ of Anne Arundel County deceased the said negro woman being sold and conveyed by us Charles F. Boone and Dorsey Jacob as Executors and in virtue of the power and authority vested in us by the last will and testament of said Robert Boone dec.d To Have and to Hold the said described negro woman "Charlotte" for the term of years specified above but no longer to the said Archibald Hodges as aforesaid his executors administrators and assigns. We the said Charles F. Boone and Dorsey Jacob hereby state that the said negro woman Charlotte was willed to be free by the aforesaid Mary Johnson at the age of thirty five years but the age of said negro was not stated in the will neither could we find any record of her age but from the information we have collected otherwise she is of the age stated above and has to serve as above but in case she should be found hereafter to be older than above stated and the same proved the said Robert Boone's estate will be answerable to the said Archibald Hodges at the rate per year he paid for her or to the said negro as the case may be In Witness whereof we hereto set our hands and seals this twenty third day of October eighteen hundred and forty eight Signed sealed in delivered Dorsey Jacob (seal) in presence of Ch.s F. Boone (seal) Wm Hawkins Archibald Hodges (seal) State of Maryland Anne Arundel County to wit Be it remembered that on this twenty third day of October eighteen hundred and forty eight before the subscriber a Justice of the peace for said County appear Charles F. Boone & Dorsey Jacob Executors as aforesaid and Archibald Hodges they being known to me to be the persons described as and professing to be parties to the foregoing Bill of Sale and acknowledge the same to be their act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof Acknowledged before Wm Hawkins And at the same time and place also appeared Archibald Hodges the grantee in the said Bill of Sale name and made oath that the consideration set forth in within named Bill of Sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth sworn before W.m Hawkins Recorded on the 8.th day of November 1848 Cost $.87½ paid |
