Bill of Sale of Negroes
from Andrew J. Phelps
Adm.r of James Phelps
                    to
Randolph S. Cromwell

Know all men by these presents that
I Andrew J. Phelps administrator of
James Phelps deceased of Anne Arundel
County and State of Maryland for and
consideration of the sum of seven hundred
and sixty two Dollars lawfull money of the United States in hand paid
by Randolph S. Cromwell of said County and State at or before the sealing
and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged
Have granted bargained and sold and by these presents Do grant
bargain and sell unto the said Randolph S. Cromwell his executors administrators
and assigns Four Negroes Slaves for life to wit Moses a man
aged about forty three years Linda a woman aged about forty two years and
property of James Phelps of Anne Arundel County now deceased,
       To Have and to hold the said described negro slaves for life to
the said Randolph S. Cromwell his executors administrators and
assigns forever and i the said Andrew J Phelps administrator as
aforesaid for my self my heirs executors and administrators the said
Negro slaves for life unto the said Randolph S. Cromwell his Executors
Administrators and assigns against me the said Andrew J.
Phelps Administrator as aforesaid my executors and Administrators
and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever shall
and will warrant and forever defend by these presents
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
day of May Eighteen Hundred and forty Eight
Signed sealed and delivered
       In the presence of            Andrew J. Phelps Adm.r   (Seal)

Be it Remembered that on this twenty second day of May 1848
before the subscriber a Justice of the peace for said County Appears Andrew
J. Phelps administrator of James Phelps and acknowledges
the above instrument of writing to be his act and deed according to the
true intent and meaning thereof
And at the same time and appeared before me Randolph S.
Cromwell the donee named in the above bill of sale and made
Oath in due form of law that the consideration set forth in said bill
of sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth
