Bill of Sale from
William Bryan
Guardian of Williams
                 To
Henry E. Ballard
Know all men by these presents  That We William
Bryan Guardian of Joseph Selby Williams and Joseph
Selby Williams of Anne Arundel County for and in
consideration of the sum of two hundred and twenty five
dollars current money to us in hand paid by Captain
Henry E Ballard of said County who now is and for
more than one year past has been a bona fide resident of
the State of Maryland the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge,
have bargained sold assigned and transferred and
by these presents do bargain sell assign and transfer unto the said Henry E Ballard
his Executors Administrators and assigns all our right and interest in and to a negro boy
named Charles Bayner who was bequeathed to the said Joseph Selby Williams by
the will of her Grand Father Edward Williams dated the twenty third day of April
Eighteen hundred and thirty five for a term of twenty two years from date of said will
and then to be free and discharged from servitude now aged about Eighteen years of
black complexion, about five feet seven inches high being one of the negroes who
were directed to be sold by the said William Bryan (appointed Guardian of the
said Joseph Selby Williams by the said Court) under and by virtue of a Decree of
the said Orphans Court of Anne Arundel County and to which sale the said
Joseph Selby Williams assents by joining in the conveyance
    To Have and to Hold the said negro boy named Charles Bayner now aged
about eighteen years with all our right and interest thereto, unto the yet unexpired,
term of service of the said negro Charles Bayner, for and during the term
of servitude by the said Will reserved as aforesaid, that is to say from the date
hereof until the twenty third day of April in the year eighteen hundred and
fifty seven and then to be free and discharged from all manner of servitude
unto the said Henry E Ballard his Executors administrators and assigns
The said negro Charles Bayner being One of the negroes, who by a Decree of the
said Orphans Court dated the 16.th day of March 1847 were directed to be sold
by the said William Bryan Guardian of the said Joseph Selby Williams appointed
by the said Court for the advancement of his said Wards interest
          In Witness whereof we, the said William Bryan, Guardian as aforesaid
and Joseph Selby Williams, and Henry E. Ballard, have hereunto subscribed
Our names and affixed Our Seals this Tenth day of April in the year Eighteen
hundred and forty seven
