day of March Eighteen hundred and forty seven, the date of the said
Single bill, with interest thereon payable semiannually.  And to secure
the payment thereof is willing to execute these presents
Now this Indenture witnesseth that the said John S. Sellman
for and in consideration of the premises.  And of the sum of five dollars
current money to him in hand paid by the said John B. Wells at and
before the Sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt of which is
hereby acknowledged, hath granted, bargained and sold, and by these
presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said John B Wells his
executors administrators and assigns the following named negroes
slaves for life to wit, Manuel, Big Jack, Tom, Phil and William to have
and to hold the above described negro slaves unto the said John B Wells
his executors administrators and assigns, to his and their own use and
behoof  Provided always, and it is declared to be the true intent and
meaning of these presents, that if the said John S. Sellman do and shall
well and truly pay or cause to be paid on or before the tenth day of March one
thousand eight hundred and forty nine to the said John B. Wells his
executors administrators or assigns the aforesaid sum of fifteen hundred
and ninety dollars and forty six cents, with interest thereon semi annually,
to wit  On the tenth day of September and On the tenth of March in
each year until the payment of the said principal debt then and in such
case these presents and every matter and thing herein contained shall cease
determine and be utterly void to all intents and purposes, any thing herein
contained to the contrary notwithstanding
In Testimony whereof the said John S. Sellman hath subscribed his name
and affixed his seal the day and year first above written

State of Maryland, Anne Arundel County, to wit.

Be it remembered that On this seventeenth day of March One thousand
eight hundred and forty seven personally appeared John S. Sellman
before the subscriber One of the State of Marylands justices of the peace
for the County aforesaid and Acknowledged the foregoing instrument of
writing to be his act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned
