Mortgage from Edwin W. Duvall to
Robert Welch of Ben dated the twelfth
day of October eighteen hundred and forty
six
 This Indenture made this
twelfth day of October in the
year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and forty six
between Edwin W. Duvall of
Anne Arundel County and State of Maryland of the one part and Robert
Welch of Ben of the County and State aforesaid of the other part  Whereas the
said Edwin W. Duvall is now acting as Deputy Sheriff to the said Robert Welch
of Ben without having handed as such  And whereas as Deputy as aforesaid
he has and is daily assuming large responsibilities for the said Robert Welch
of Ben as Sheriff of the County aforesaid and being desirous as far as may be of
indemnifying and saving harmless the said Robert Welch of Ben on account
of the responsibilities of samed or which the said Edwin E. Duvall may assure
for the said Robert Welch of Ben as his Deputy  He the said Edwin W Duvall
has agreed to execute these presents  Now therefore this Indenture Witnesseth
that the said Edwin W. Duvall for and in consideration of the premises
and for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars current money to
him in hand paid by the said Robert Welch of Ben at and before the
sealing and delivery hereof the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged
the said Edwin W Duvall has granted bargained and sold and by these
presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Robert Welch of Ben one
bay horse & harness and one four wheel buggy.  To Have and To Hold the
property so as aforesaid described unto the said Robert Welch of Ben his
Executors administrators and assigns  Provided however and these presents
are executed upon this express condition that if the said Edwin W Duvall
shall and well faithfully discharge the duties which may from time to
time be imposed upon him as Deputy Sheriff by the said Robert Welch
of Ben as Sheriff as aforesaid and shall well and truly pay over and account
for all monies which may come into his hands as such to the said
Robert Welch of Ben as Sheriff as aforesaid then & in that case these presents
shall cease determine and be utterly void any thing therein contained to
the contrary thereof in any wise notwithstanding.  In Witness whereof
the said Edwin W Duvall has hereto set his hand & affixed his seal the
day and year first herein before written
