       State of Maryland   Anne Arundel County to wit

    On this first day of May 1846 personally appeared before me the
Subscriber a justice of the peace of the said State in and for said County
Junius Slemaker and acknowledge the aforesaid instrument of writing
to be his act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned

       in the presents of                  Edward C. Stewart   (seal)

Bill of sale from Juliah Ann Lyles
to George D. Lyles dated the eleventh
day of May eighteen hundred and
forty six
Know all men by these
presents that I Juliah
Ann Lyles of Anne Arundel
County and State of
Maryland in the village
of Friendship of said County for and in consideration of the sum
of six hundred dollars of current money secured to be paid to me
within a specified time or times within five years from this date
by Geo D Lyles of Friendship in the County and State as aforesaid
at or before the ensealing and delivering of this presents
the receipts whereof I the said Julia Ann Lyles do hereby acknowledge
have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant
bargain and sell unto the said George D Lyles his executors administrators
and assigns one negro man called William or Bill Blake
aged about fifty years old but healthy and sound and one negro
man called Charles Pratt aged about fifty six years also his wife
Ann Pratt about thirty six years of age.  These three negro Slaves
are all believed to be of sound healthy State of body and mind are are now
in my possession  To Have and To Hold the said three Negro Slaves
to the said George D Lyles his Executors administrators and assigns
forever and I the said Juliet Anne Lyles for myself my heirs
executors and administrators the aforesaid Slaves to the said George
D Lyles his Executors administrators and assigns against me the said
Juliet Ann Lyles my executors and administrators and against
all and every person and persons whomsoever shall and will
warrant and forever defend by these presents.  Provided nevertheless
that in case I the said Juliah Ann Lyles shall pay and satisfy
to the said George D Lyles or to his Executors administrators or assigns
the sum of six hundred dollars current money with interest for
the same or whatever parts in any way hath been paid upon
the value of these negroes over and beyond their annual hires or valuation
for their services within the five years aforesaid ending the date of these
