being the true intent and meaning thereof that the said property herein before
described is mortgaged by me the said John Rice to secure to the said Rignal
B Woodward and William H Baldwin the payment of the money aforesaid   In
Witness whereof I the said John Rice have hereunto set my hand and affixed my
seal this Eleventh day of October one thousand Eight hundred and forty four

             At the foot of the aforegoing was thus written to wit

       Maryland Anne Arundel County fss  On this 11 October 1844 before me one of
the Justices of the peace in and for said county appears John Rice and acknowledges
the foregoing writing to be his act and deed according to the true intent and
meaning thereof and the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided

       Know all men by these presents that I John S Selby of Anne Arundel
county for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars Current money to me in
hand paid by Richard H Battee and William L Lowe merchants trading in the City
of Baltimore under the name style and firm of Battee & Lowe at or before the sealing
and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted
bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the
said Battee and Lowe their Executors administrators and assigns all the Crops of
Tobacco now in the houses on my farm in Anne Arundel County  To have and To hold
said crop unto the said Battee and Lowe their Executors administrators and
assigns in trust Nevertheless that they shall and will as soon as reasonably may
be convened after receipt thereto sell the same Crop of the best prices which can be
obtained for the same and the Nett proceeds thereof apply to the payment of the
monies now due or which at the time of sale may be due from me to the said
Battee and Lowe and the residue of such proceeds if any to pay over to me my
Executors administrators or assigns  And for myself my heirs Executors and
administrators I do hereby Covenant and agree to and with the said Battee
and Lowe that I and they will with all Convenient dispatch and at my and
their proper charge and costs strip pack and prepare said Tobacco for [illegible]
and strip the same to the City of Baltimore consigned to the said Battee and Lowe
for the purpose of sale as aforesaid  In Witness whereof I do hereby set my
hand and seal this nineteenth day of October in the year Eighteen hundred and
