Deed Manumission to
Joseph Brown
I Mary Haines of Howard County
Maryland do hereby manumit and
set free my negro slave Joseph Brown
he being over ten and under forty
five years of age being of dark complexion rather thick
set about five feet eight inches in height his freedom
to commence from the date of these presents he having
been bequeathed to me as part of the personal property
of the late Amey Howard if not previously manumitted
          Witness my hand and seal this 7th day of February
1860

       I hereby certify that on this 7th day of February
Eighteen hundred and sixty before the Subscriber a Justice
of the Peace of the State of Maryland in and for
Howard County personally appeared Mary Haines
and acknowledged the foregoing deed to be her act

Know all men by these presents;
Whereas I Mary Haines of Howard
County in the State of Maryland
am possessed of a Mulatto
Servant woman named Honor who was the child
of Servant woman named Sarah both of whom were
bequeathed to me by the last will of Amey Howard
late of Said County deceased as part of the rest &
residue of her estate; And Whereas I do know that the
said Amey Howard did in her life time execute acknowledge
& send to be recorded a Deed Whereby She Manumitted
or intended to manumit among others the said last
named servant Woman Sarah & her children as they
severally attained the age of twenty five years.  And Whereas
