of the sum of two hundred and fifty
dollars lawful money of the united states in
hand paid by William H. Whalen of Howard
county in the state aforesaid at or before the
sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt
whereof is hereby acknowledged Have
granted bargained and sold and by these
presents do grant bargain and sell unto the
said William H. Whalen his executors administrators
and assigns one negro woman
slave named Betty aged fifteen years on the
sixteenth day of march 1852 said negro woman
to remain with and serve said William
H. Whalen his administrators or assigns for
and during the full space and term of
Eleven years and six months from the 16.th
day of september 1852 the said Eleven years
and six months ending on the sixteenth day
of March in the year eighteen hundred and
sixty four and    is further understood that
if said Negro Woman slave shall have
my issue Males or females that the male or
males shall be free at the age of twenty one
years and the female or females shall be
free at ^the age of^ sixteen years and that the said
Negro woman slave Betty after the sixteenth
day of March in the year eighteen hundred
and sixty four shall be free from servitude
or service from me said Basil Crapster and
from all other persons whatsoever and in
no case to be taken or sold out of the state of
Maryland during her servitude  To Have and
To Hold the same described negro woman
slave Betty to the said William H. Whalen
or his executors administrators or assigns
for and during the time or terms aforesaid
and I the said Basil Crapster for myself
my heirs executors and administrators the
said Negro Woman slave Betty unto the said
William H. Whalen his executors administrators
and assigns against me the
said Basil Crapster my executors and administrators
and against all and every
other person or persons whatsoever shall
and will warrent and forever defend by
