48 Alward Johnson Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the following from x.d √ Bill of Sale was received and recorded on the 27th day of April John Griffith 1853 to wit: Know all men by these presents that I, John Griffith of the City of baltimore and State of Maryland, for and in consideration of the sum of Four Hundred and seventy five Dollars Current money of Maryland to me in hand paid by Alward Johnson of Dorchester County and State before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledge, the said John Griffith has granted bargained and sold conveyed and trasfered and by these presents doth grant, bargain and sell convey and transfer unto the said Alward Johnson his heirs and assigns forever, one negro Woman Polly aged sixteen years with her infant female child slaves for life and now in the possession of the said Alward Johnson. To Have and To Hold the above described Negro Woman Polly and her infant child unto the said Alward Johnson, his heirs and assigns forever and to and for no other intent or purpose whatsoever against me the said John Griffith and my heirs and against all persons whatsoever claiming the said Negro Woman Polly and child, will warrant and defend by these presents. In Testimony Whereof the said John Griffith has hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal this twenty seventh day of April, Eighteen hundred and fifty three Signed, sealed and delivered in presence of John Griffith (seal) D. W. Tyler The State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit: Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified, that on the twenty seventh day of April in the year Eighteen hundred and fifty three, personally appeared John Griffith the party grantor in the above and aforegoing Bill of Sale and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and delivered the same for the uses and purposes therein mentioned, and on the same day before me as aforesaid, personally appeared Alward Johnson grantee named in the aforegoing Bill of Sale, and made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God, that the consideration mentioned in the aforegoing Bill of Sale is true and bonifide as therein set forth Acknowledged and Sworn before D. W. Tyler 1853 April 27th Received of Alward Johnson one Dollar in lieu of a stamp on this Bill of Sale Francis J. Henry Clk Delivered October 20th 1853 to Alward Johnson James M Carroll Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following √ from x.d Bill of Sale was received and recorded on the 2nd day of May Thomas Breerwood 1853 to wit: Know all men by these presents, that I, Thomas Exor of James Moore Breerwood Executor of James Moore Deces.d of Dorchester County, and State of Maryland, for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and eleven Dollars and twenty five Cents Current money, to me in hand paid by James M. Carroll of Dorchester County and State of Maryland, at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents, the receipt whereof, I the said Thomas Breerwood Executors aforesaid, do hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained and sold at Public Sale, and by these presents do grant, bargain & sell, unto the said James M. Carroll, his Executors, administrators and assigns, Negro Woman Sophia, to serve twenty years from the 1st day of January, eighteen hundred & forty eight past as by the Will of James Moore will more fully appear.
