297 his act and deed: and at the same time before me also appeared Thomas B. Sherman and made and in due form of law that the Consideration in the said Mortgage is true and bona fide as therein set forth. Jno B Leckie J. P. James H Lowe Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following Indenture √ from xd was received and recorded on the 5th day of October 1857 to wit John Henry Lake In Dorchester County Orphans' Court John Henry Lake a negro boy of the age of eight years the first day of May last past being brought into Court and it being represented to the Court that the said John Henry Lake is not at service or learning a trade or employed in the service of his parents and that he is without means sufficient for his maintenance or support; and the Court being satisfied that said representation is true; and believing also that it would greatly conduce to the good of the said child that he should be put to learn some trade or useful business. The said John Henry Lake is therefore on this fifth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven bound as an apprentice by John H. Hodson, Zadock H. Rosse and Levin Jones Justices of the Orphans' Court for Dorchester County to James H. Lowe until he the said John Henry Lake shall arrive to the age of twenty one years under the provisions of an act of the General Assembly of Maryland passed December Session 1839 Chapter 35. And the said James H. Lowe being here present in Court agrees to take the said John Henry Lake as an apprentice until he shall arrive to the said age. And the said James H. Lowe doth also on his part acknowledge himself bound and by these presents doth consent promise and agree to teach the said apprentice the trade of a Farmer and to supply him with suitable clothing and maintenance during his apprenticeship and when free to give him twenty Dollars and two suits of good clothes as freedom dues and the further sum of Twenty five Dollars in lieu of education. In Witness Whereof we hereunto subscribe out names and affix our seals to this Indenture this fifth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven. Jno. H. Denward Hughes Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following Bill of Sale √ from xd was received and recorded on the 8th day of January 1858 to wit: Samuel Eaves I Samuel Eaves of Dorchester County in Consideration of One Hundred & forty Dollars paid me by Denward Hughes of Dorchester County do hereby bargain and sell to the said Denward Hughes the following property to wit: one gray horse Charles, one four wheel Carriage, one wood waggon, one ox Cart, two Beds & furniture and all the residue of my Household & Kitchen furniture one Stack top Fodder, Eight Barrels Corn & set of Carpenters tools & one whip saw.
