255 State of Maryland do hereby manumit and set free my negro woman Lucy Cornish her freedom to commence from the first day of January Eighteen Hundred and sixty. Witness my hand and seal this twelfth day of January Eighteen Hundred and fifty seven. Test Levi D. Travers J. P. Sophia S. Keene (seal) James Smith The State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit I hereby certify that on this 12th day of January Eighteen Hundred and fifty seven before the subscriber a Justice of the peace of the said State and County personally appeared Sophia S. Keene and acknowledged the above deed of Manumission to be her act. Levi D. Travers J. P. William D. Twilley Be it remembered and it is hereby certified √ to xd that the following Bill of Sale was received Samuel L. Byrn and recorded on the 2d day of February 1857 to wit I William D. Twilley intermarried with Elisabeth A Vincent administratrix of Willis Vincent & Henry C Vincent of Dorchester County in consideration of Seven hundred dollars paid me by Samuel L. Byrn of Dorchester County do hereby bargain and sell to the said Samuel L. Byrn Negro girl Maria aged about seven years & negro girl Rachel aged about thirteen years slaves for life. Witness my hand and seal this 31st day of January in the year eighteen hundred & fifty seven 1857 Witness William D. Twilley (seal) Charles Corkran State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit I hereby certify that on this 31st day of January 1857 personally appeared before the subscriber a Justice of the peace for Dorchester County aforesaid William D. Twilley administrator of Willis Vincent & Henry C Vincent by right of intermarriage & acknowledged the foregoing bill of sale to be his act. Charles Corkran Deld to William D. Vincent of Dorchester County in consideration of an order of the Orphans Court to sell the negroes of said Willis Vincent dated January 5th 1857 and in further consideration of a further order of said court dated January 26th 1857 authorizing said Twilley as Guardian by virtue of his intermarriage to invest |
