244 John Ross negro Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following Deed of Manumission was √ from xd received and recorded on the 13th day of November Anno Domini 1856 to wit Josiah J Meekins I Josiah J. Meekins of Shelby County and State of Missouri do hereby manumit and set free my negro man slave John Ross aged thirty seven years of dark color stout made a resident of Dorchester County in the State of Maryland his freedom to Commence from the date of these presents. Witness my hand and seal this first day of September in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and fifty six Test D. W. Tyler William Andrews Josiah J. Meekins (seal) The State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit: Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that on this 1st day of September 1856 before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the Peace of the State of Maryland in and for Dorchester County personally appears Josiah J. Meekins he being known to me to be the person who is named and described as signing and making the above acknowledgement and did sign seal and acknowledge the same to be his act and deed for the uses and purposes therein mentioned according to the acts of Assembly in such case made and provided. Acknowledged before and Certified by D. W. Tyler George Mister Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following Bill of Sale was √ from xd received and recorded on the 17th day of November Anno Domini 1856 to wit: Nancy Creighton I Nancy Creighton of Baltimore City and State of Maryland in Consideration of Eight Hundred and sixty two Dollars paid me by George Mister of Dorchester County and State aforesaid do hereby bargain and sell to the said George Mister the following property to wit: Negro Woman Jane Slacum aged about forty years and her two Children Margaret Hester aged about four years and Sarah Elizabeth aged about one year as slaves for life Witness my hand and seal this twenty seventh day of October Eighteen Hundred and fifty six Nancy Creighton (seal) State of Maryland Baltimore City to wit: I hereby Certify that on this twenty seventh day of October Eighteen Hundred and fifty six personally appeared Nancy Creighton before the subscriber a Justice of the Peace for Baltimore City aforesaid and acknowledged the foregoing Bill of Sale to be her act. Acknowledged before A. H. Penington J. P. State of Maryland Baltimore City sct: I hereby Certify that Augustine H Penington Esquire before whom the annexed acknowledgment was made and who has thereto subscribed his name was at the time of so doing a Justice of the Peace of the State of Maryland in and for the City of Baltimore duly Commissioned and sworn In Testimony Whereof I hereto set my hand and affix the seal of the Superior Court of Baltimore [seal] City this 27th day of October A.
