February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty six Personally appeared before me a
Justice of the Peace in and for said County William Batchelor party mortgagor and acknowledge the within
and aforegoing mortgage Bill of Sale to be his act and deed according to the purport true intent and
meaning of the same and at the same time came before me James Murphey party mortgagee within mentioned
and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the Consideration set forth in
this mortgage Bill of Sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth according to the true meaning
of the Act of Assembly of 1846 Chapter 271 made and provided

Robert Meekins                       Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following ^Bill of Sale^ was received
    √   from                               and recorded on the 9th day of October Anno Domini 1856 to wit:
Barzillai Slacum admr               Know all men by these presents that I Barzillai Slacum admr of John
of John W. Hayward dec.d      W. Hayward dec.d of Dorchester County and State of Maryland for and in consideration
                                                of the sum of Two Hundred & forty two dollars Current money to me in
hand paid by Robert Meekins of Dorchester County and State of Maryland have granted bargained
and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Robert Meekins his heirs
and assigns the following negro boy William a slave for life.  To Have and To Hold the
said negro boy William sold by me the said Barzillai Slacum as admr of John W. Hayward
dec.d by virtue of an order of the Orphans' Court bearing date August 25th 1856 as above bargained
and sold unto the said Robert Meekins his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever.  In
Testimony Whereof I Barzillai Slacum admr of John W. Hayward dec.d have hereto set my hand
& affixed my seal this seventh day of October Eighteen hundred and fifty six.
Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of                                               Barzillai Slacum   (seal)

Henry C. Woodland J. P. a Justice of the Peace for Dorchester County, M.d
                                                                                                                         Maryland Dorchester County
to wit:   On the seventh day of Oct in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred fifty six
Personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for said County the above named
Barzillai Slacum admr of John W Hayward dec'd and acknowledged the above Bill of
Sale to be his act and deed according to the purport true intent and meaning of the same and
at the same time came before me Robert Meekins above mentioned and made oath on the Holy
Evangely of Almighty God that the consideration set forth in this Bill of Sale is true and
Bona fide as therein set forth according to the true meaning of the Act of Assembly of 1846
