1855 Recd. of Doctr. W. A. Smith one Dollar in lieu of a Stamp on this Bill of Sale

Cordelia Lake              Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the following Bill
    √   from                    of Sale was received and recorded on the 20th day of March in the
John Elliott admr. of      year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred and Fifty five, to wit:
    Jason Elliott                           Know all men by these presents that I John Elliott administrator
                                     of Jason Elliott of Dorchester County and State of Maryland for
and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred and sixty dollars current money of Maryland
to me in hand paid by Cordelia Lake of said County and State before the ensealing
and deliver of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the said John
Elliott admr. of Jason Elliott by order of the orphans court of said County has granted
bargained sold Conveyed and Confirmed and by these presents doth Bargain sell convey and
transfer unto the said Cordelia Lake her heirs and assigns forever one negro girl named
Elizabeth aged about twenty six years a slave for life and now in the possession of the said
Cordelia Lake.  To Have and To Hold the above described negro girl Elizabeth unto the
said Cordelia Lake her heirs and assigns forever and to and for no other use intent or purpose
whatsoever against me the said John Elliott admr. of Jason Elliott and my heirs and against
all persons whatsoever Claiming the said negro girl Elizabeth.  In testimony whereof the
said John Elliott admr. of Jason Elliott has hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal
this the twentieth day of March Eighteen hundred and fifty five

The State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit:
                   Be it Remembered and it is hereby Certified that on the twentieth
day of March in the year Eighteen hundred and fifty five before the subscriber one
of the Justices of the peace in and for said County personally appeared John Elliot admr.
of Jason Elliott the party grantor in the above and aforegoing Bill of Sale and acknowledged
the Same to be his act and deed and delivered the Same for the uses and purposes
therein mentioned and on the same day before me the Justice aforesaid personally appeared
Cordelia Lake the party grantee named in the aforegoing Bill of Sale and made Oath on
the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the Consideration mentioned in the aforegoing
Bill of Sale is true and Bona fide as therein set forth
