138 I hereby certify that on the 18th day of November anno Domini Eighteen hundred & fifty four personally appeared before me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace of the State of Maryland in and for Dorchester County Ezekiel T. Fleming party bargainee mentioned in the aforegoing Bill of Sale and made oath that the consideration set forth in the above Bill of Sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth Acknowledged Before and certified by W.m D. Barrow Received November 18th 1854 of Ezekiel T. Fleming the sum of one dollar in lieu of a stamp on this Bill of sale Francis J. Henry clk Martha A. Cook Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the following Ann M. Cook & William A. Cook Manumission was received and recorded on the 18th day of November √ to xd 1854 to wit John Ross (cold man) To all whom it may concern we Martha Ann Cook, Ann Maria Cook and William A. Cook widow children Devisees and Residuary Legatees of Thomas Cook of the Town of Cambridge in Dorchester County and state of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations us thereunto moving have released from slavery manumitted & set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumit and set free our negro named John Ross being of the age Twenty eight years when he attains the age of thirty five years which will take place January the first eighteen hundred and sixty two when he will be able (without accident) to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and him the said negro man named John Ross we do declare to be then from the said January the first eighteen hundred & sixty two and from thenceforth free manumitted & discharged from all manner of service or servitude to us our executors or administrators forever In witness whereof we have hereto set our hands and seals this 9th day of November 1854 her Signed sealed & delivered Martha A x Cook (seal) in the presence of mark R. Stewart Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the following √ from xd Bill of Sale was received and recorded on the 29th day of November Mary Jones admrx T. H. Jones 1854 to wit Know all men by these Presents that I Mary Jones administratrix of Thomas Henry Jones deceased of Dorchester county in the State of Maryland for and in consideration of the Sum of Four hundred and twenty five dollars current money to me in hand paid by James A. Stewart of Cambridge in the said county of Dorchester and State of Maryland at and before the Sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged Have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said James A. Stewart his executors administrators and assigns a negro |
