135 In witness whereof I the said James Akeman have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this sixteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred fifty four his Signed sealed and delivered James x Akeman (seal) in the presence of mark Charles Corkran Maryland Dorchester County to wit: On this sixteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred fifty four before me one of the Justices of the peace for Dorchester County apears James Akeman and acknowledges the aforesaid instrument of writing to be his act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof and the act of assembly in such Cases made and provided Charles Corkran Maryland Dorchester County To wit: Be it remembered that on the date of the aforegoing acknowledgment before me the subscriber a Justice of the peace in and for said County personally appears Eliza Akeman part to the foregoing Bill of Sale or instrument of writing and makes Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the Consideration set forth in the aforegoing bill of Sale or instrument of writing is true and bona fide as stated therein Sworn before Charles Corkran Alward Johnson Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following Bill of Sale was received and √ from recorded on the 5th day of October 1854 to wit: James N. Sherman Know all men by these presents that I James N. Sherman of Dorchester County in the State of Maryland for and in consideration of the sum of Six Hundred and forty one Dollars Current money of Maryland to me in hand paid by Alward Johnson of the Same County and State aforesaid at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof I the said James N. Sherman do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained sold and delivered and by these presents do grant bargain sell and deliver unto the said Alward Johnson his heirs executors administrators and assigns a negro boy Called Peter aged about Nineteen years to serve the said Alward Johnson as a slave until the first day of January Eighteen Hundred and Seventy Six and then to be free. To Have and to Hold the said negro boy Peter as above bargained and sold or mentioned and intended so to be to the said Alward Johnson his heirs Executors administrators and assigns forever and I the sid James N. Sherman for myself my heirs executors and administrators all and singular the said negro boy Peter unto the said Alward Johnson his executors administrators and assigns against me the said James N. Sherman my executors and administrators and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents In witness whereof the said James N. Sherman and Alward Johnson have hereunto subscribed their names and affixed their seals this Fifth day of October Eighteen Hundred and fifty four. Signed sealed & delivered James N. Sherman (seal) in the presence of Alward Johnson (seal) Robert R. Robertson State of Maryland Dorchester County to wit: Be it remembered that on this Fifth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four personally appeared before me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace of the State of Maryland in and for the county aforesaid James N. Sherman and Alward Johnson and did severally acknowledge the within Bill of Sale or instrument of writing to be their act and deed. At the same time before me Justice of the Peace as aforesaid personally appeared Alward Johnson party purchaser within mentioned and made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the Consideration set forth in the within Bill of Sale or instrument of writing is true and bona fide as therein set forth Acknowledged & sworn to before Robert R. Robertson The erasure of part of the thirteenth and all of the fourteenth fifteenth and sixteenth lines of the aforegoing & Delivered to Thomas H. Hicks the 17.th day of April 1833 |
