(House Bill 656)

AN ACT concerning

Charles County - Length of Service Award Program - Death Benefit

FOR the purpose of providing for a death benefit of a certain amount to be paid to
certain beneficiaries when certain volunteers of the Charles County volunteer
fire, emergency medical service, or specialized rescue units are killed in the line
of duty during the course of certain services or die having completed a certain
amount of a certain service under certain circumstances; and generally relating
to the determination and payment of death benefits under the Length of Service
Award Program in Charles County.

BY repealing

The Public Local Laws of Charles County
Section 54-9 J.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article 9 - Charles County

54-9.

[J. When an unqualified volunteer is killed in the line of duty during the
course of service as a volunteer fireman or squadman after July 1, 1989, a death
benefit of five thousand dollars ($5,000.) shall be paid to the unqualified volunteer's
designated beneficiary.]

J. WHEN AN UNQUALIFIED VOLUNTEER IS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
DURING THE COURSE OF SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF A FIRE, EMERGENCY MEDICAL
SERVICE, OR SPECIALIZED RESCUE UNIT OR DIES HAVING COMPLETED AT LEAST
ONE (1) YEAR OF LENGTH OF SERVICE AWARD PROGRAM QUALIFYING SERVICE AND
IS CARRIED ON CURRENT MEMBERSHIP ROSTERS AND DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR
DEATH BENEFITS AS PROVIDED IN SUBSECTION H OF THIS SECTION, A DEATH
BENEFIT OF FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($5,000.) SHALL BE PAID TO THE
UNQUALIFIED VOLUNTEER'S DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY.
