251. John W. Brown Be it remembered & it is hereby certified that the following Ex.d from 65 Bill of sale was recorded on the 9.th day of May 1850, To wit Sarah B. Brown {Stamp} Know all men by these presents that I, Sarah {one dol.} B. Brown, of Caroline County and state of Maryland, for and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred dollars, current money to me in hand paid, at & before the sealing & delivery of these presents, by John W. Brown of Dorchester County and state aforesaid, the receipt of which, I, the said Sarah B. Brown, do hereby acknowledge. I, the said Sarah B. Brown have granted, bargained & sold & delivered, and by these presents do grant, bargain & sell & deliver unto the said John W. Brown, a Negro Boy, Charles, about Eighteen years old, whose term of servitude or slavery will expire on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and sixty eight (1868) as reference to the record of his Manumission in the records of Dorchester County will show: To have and to hold the said Negro Boy Charles, above bargained & sold, or mentioned and intended so to be, during the balance of his term of servitude or slavery, unto the said John W. Brown, his heirs, executors, Administrators and Assigns. In testimony whereof, I the said Sarah B. Brown, as also the said John W. Brown, have hereunto set our names and affixed our seals on this thirtieth day of April in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fifty (1850). Signed, sealed & delivered in the presence of Sarah B. Brown (seal) Cha.s T. Smith John W. Brown (seal) State of Maryland, Dorchester County, To wit: On this thirtieth day of April in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fifty (1850) before me the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace, in & for said County, personally appears Sarah B. Brown (she being known to me) and acknowledged the above Indenture, or instrument of writing to be her act and deed, according to the true intent & meaning thereof, and the acts of Assembly in such case made & provided: At the same time personally appears John W. Brown, party grantor (he being by me known) and made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the consideration set forth in this Bill of sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth. Acknowledged & sworn before Cha.s T. Smith Thomas Wheatley Be it remembered & it is hereby certified that the following Bill of sale Ex.d from 55 was recorded on the 13.th day of May 1850, To wit: Thomas Bennett Know all men by these presents that I, Thomas Bennett, of Dorchester County in the state of Maryland, for and in consideration of one hundred & seventy five dollars, current money, to me in hand paid by Thomas Wheatley, of the County and state aforesaid, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have granted, bargained, sold & delivered, unto the said Thomas Wheatley, one Negro Girl called May Kennard, aged aged Eleven Years and five months and seventeen days, to serve till she is thirty years of age; which said Negro Girl May Kennard, I will warrant and defend to the said Thomas Wheatley, his heirs, executors, Administrators & Assigns, till she shall be thirty years of age and against me my heirs Executors & administrators |
