237. paid by Joann Howard of Dorchester County & State of Maryland, have granted, bargained & sold, and by these presents do grant, bargain & sell unto the said Joann Howard, her heirs & Assigns, the following Negroes, To wit: Mary Ann to serve untill the end of the year Eighteen hundred & seventy one, 1871, and Negro Man Josiah or little Jo, to serve untill the end of the year Eighteen hundred & sixty four, 1864, at which time he will be entitled to his freedom under the will of Jacob Howard, deceased, and sound in body & mind: To have and to hold the said Negro Woman Mary Ann to serve untill the end of the year Eighteen hundred & seventy one, and Negro man Josiah or little Joe to serve untill the end of the year Eighteen hundred & sixty four, 1864, at which time he will be entitled to his freedom as aforesaid, as above bargained & sold, unto the said Joann Howard, his heirs, executors, Administrators & Assigns, against me the said James Thompson, Executor of W.m J. Howard and his and my heirs, executors & administrators, and against all & every other person or persons whatsoever, shall & will warrant & forever defend. In testimony whereof I, James Thompson, Executor aforesaid, & Joann Howard have hereto set their hands and affixed Seals this twenty fifth day of Feby Eighteen hundred & 50. Signed, sealed & delivered in the James Thompson, Ex.r (seal) presence of W.m W. LeCompte of W.m J. Howard Joann Howard (seal) Maryland, Dorchester County, To wit: On the twenty fifth day of February in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred & 50, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in & for said County, the within named James Thompson, Executor of W.m J. Howard, and Joann Howard, and acknowledged the within Bill of sale to be act & deed, according to the purport, true intent & meaning of the same, and at the same time came before me Joann Howard within mentioned and made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God, that the consideration set forth, according to the true meaning of the Act of Assembly of 1846, Chapter 271, made & provided. Acknowledged before Charles Corkran. Rec.d March 8.th 1850 one dollar in lieu of a stamp on this Bill of sale. Wm Jackson clk. Edwin E. LeCompte Adm.r Know all men by these presents that I Samuel D Lecompte of Dorchester County administrator of Ann Cook late of said County deceased for and in Consideration of the Sum of One hundred and fifty One Dollars current money to men in hand paid or Secured to be paid by Edwin E Medford of Dorchester County in the State of Maryland have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell negro girl Caroline unto the said Edwin E Medford his executors & administrators and assigns the said Delivered to Edw.d Medford May 24th 1852. |
