216. James A. Stewart Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the Ex.d from 65 following Bill of Sale was recorded on the 5.th day of Purnell B. Carey & January Anno Domini 1850, To wit: George H. Schley Know all men by these presents that we Purnell B. Carey and George H. Schley, of Dorchester County & State of Maryland for and in consideration of the sum of Four hundred & thirty five dollars, to us paid, or secured to be paid, by James A. Stewart of same county & state, have given, granted, bargained & sold, and by these presents do give, grant, bargain & sell, unto the said James A. Stewart and his heirs & Assigns forever, our Negro man "Littleton Hack", a slave for life, and sound in body & mind. To have and to hold the said Negro man slave "Littleton Hack", to the said James A. Stewart and his heirs & Assigns forever; And unto the said James A. Stewart and his heirs & Assigns forever, we do hereby warrant & defend the title to the said negro man Littleton as a slave for life, against us and our heirs, or any one claiming by, from, or under us, and against all persons whatever. In Witness whereof we have hereto signed our names and affixed our seals this 2.d day of January in the year Eighteen hundred & fifty Test Purnell B. Carey (seal) Charles Corkran George H. Schleigh (seal) State of Maryland, Dorchester County, To wit: On this second day of January in the year Eighteen hundred and fifty, personally appear before us the subscriber a Justice of the Peace for the said state & county, Purnell B. Carey and George H. Schley, party Grantors in the above Bill of sale, and acknowledged the aforegoing Bill of sale to be their act & deed, and we are satisfied of our own Knowledge, that the said Purnell B. Carey & George H. Schley, who profess to be the party grantors in the above Bill of sale, are the same persons who executed and acknowledged the same before me. At the same time personally appears James A. Stewart, party grantee in the said Bill of sale, & made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the consideration mentioned n the said Bill of sale is just, true & bona fide. Joseph Richardson Be it remembered and it is hereby certified that the following Deed Paid To Ex.d of Manumission was recorded on the 8.th day of January 1850, To wit: Sundry Negroes To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I Joseph Richardson, free coloured man, of Dorchester County in the State of Maryland, for divers good causes & considerations me thereunto moving, as also in further consideration of one dollar, current money, to me in hand paid, have released from slavery, liberated, manumitted and set free, and by these presents do hereby release from slavery, liberate, manumit & set free, my negro woman named |
