139. untill the twenty fifth day of December Anno Domini Eighteen hundred & fifty six, thence, and after that time, the said Negro Woman Esther to be free, and absolved from servitude: To have and to hold the said Negro Woman Esther, unto the said Samuel Higgins, his Executors, Administrators and Assigns, to his and their own proper use and benefit, for and during the term aforesaid. And I, the said James W. Henry, Agent, or Attorney as aforesaid, my heirs, Executors and Administrators, the said bargained & sold Negro Woman Esther, and her future Issue, unto the said Samuel Higgins, his heirs, executors, Administrators & Assigns, from & against all person or persons whomsoever, shall and will warrant & defend by these presents. In Witness whereof they, the aforesaid, James W. Henry and Samuel Higgins have hereunto subscribed their names, and their seals affixed the day and year first above Written. Signed, sealed & delivered in the presence of James W. Henry (seal) Geo A. Z. Smith Sam.l Higgins (seal) Dorchester County, State of Maryland, ss: Be it remembered that on this second day of December, Anno Domini Eighteen hundred & forty eight, before the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace, in and for the County and State aforesaid, personally appeared James W. Henry, (Agent or Attorney for Isaac Nevitt Steele) the party grantor to the within Bill of sale, or instrument of Writing, and also personally appeared Samuel Higgins, the party grantee in the within Bill of sale, and Acknowledged the same to be their Act and deed, according to the true intent and meaning thereof, and for the uses and purposes therein mentioned and declared, and for no other use, purpose or intent whatever. Taken and Acknowledged before Geo. A. Z. Smith J. P. Dorchester County, state of Maryland, fs. On this sixth day of December 1848, before the subscriber, a Justice of the Peace in and for the County & state aforesaid, personally appeared Samuel Higgins, the party Grantee to the within Bill of sale, who made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the consideration set forth in the within and aforesaid Bill of sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth.
