Edward Hughes       Be it remembered that the following Bill of
Paid  Ex.d   from     Sale & Manumission was recorded on the 10.th day
James Wallace         of March 1846, To wit:
                               This Instrument of writing made this 23.d February
in the year Eighteen hundred & forty six between James Wallace administrator
of Aaron Cook of Dorchester County & State of Maryland
of the one part and Edward Hughes of the same County & State aforesaid
of the other part  Witnesseth Whereas by an order of the Orphans
Court of said County the said James Wallace as Administrator aforesaid
was directed to sell and dispose of the woman and children at private
sale belonging to the Estate of the late Aaron Cook  And whereas
after having given more than three weeks notice of said order and
the said Edward having become the highest and best bidder for the
negro woman named Mary James and her two children Viz Emily
and her infant now unnamed the said James Wallace hath agreed
to execute these presents   Now this Instrument Witnesseth
that the said James Wallace for and in consideration of the
premises and the sum of one hundred Dollars in hand paid at
and before the sealing & delivery of these presents the receipt whereof
is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained & sold and by these presents
do bargain & sell unto the said Edward Hughes the negro woman
named Mary James her daughter named Emily & her infant child
to serve the said Edward as slaves the mother untill the year Eighteen
hundred and forty eight and the children untill they respectively arrive
at the age of twenty six years and then to be free.  To have and to
hold the aforesaid Negroes above bargained & sold or intended so to be
to the said Edward Hughes, his Executors, Administrators or Assigns
during the term of servitude as aforesaid   And the said James Wallace
Adm.r aforesaid have put the said Edward in full & complete possession
of all the negroes aforesaid at and before the sealing & delivery of these
presents hereby bargained & sold unto the said Edward Hughes as aforesaid
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names & affixed our
seals on the first & second part respectively on the day & year above
written                  James Wallace Adm.r of A. Cook party of the first part   (seal)
                            Edward Hughes party of the second part      (seal)

State of Maryland Dorchester County, To wit:  Be it remembered
it is hereby Certified that on this ninth day of March in the year
Eighteen hundred & forty six before the subscriber a Justice of the
Peace of the State of Maryland in and for Dorchester County personally
appears James Wallace Adm.r of Aaron Cook party of the first part
of the foregoing instrument of writing and Edward Hughes party
