172. the said Ann M. Stewart do hereby acknowledge have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said Caleb Sheppard his executors, administrators and assigns my negro Woman Maria who is sound and healthy aged twenty eight years old and her child Lewis aged 15 months both of which Negroes are now in my occupation (Ann M. Stewart's) but for the said Caleb Sheppard to have and to hold as slaves for life all and singular the two negroes and clothing to him his Executors, administrators and assigns forever. And I the said Ann M. Stewart for myself my heirs executors and administrators all and singular the negroes and clothing unto the said Caleb Sheppard his executors administrators and assigns against me the said Ann M. Stewart my executors administrators and against all and every other person or persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents of all and singular which said Negroes and other premises I the said Ann M. Stewart have put the said Caleb Sheppard in full possession. In Witness whereof I have herunto fixed my hand and seal this first day of December in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty three Acknowledged in the presence of Ann M. Stewart (Seal) Charles Corkran State of Maryland, Dorchester County To wit on this 1.st day of December in the year 1843 before me the subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for the said County and state, personally appeared Ann M. Stewart and acknowledged the above Bill of Sale or instrument of writing to be her act and deed according to the true intent and meaning thereof. Acknowledged before Charles Corkran Charles Shenton Be it remembered that the following Bill of Sale was recorded from Ex.d on the 11.th day of December 1843. To wit: Levin Adams Know all men by these presents that I Levin Adams of Dorchester County State of maryland for and in consideration of the sum of twenty four dollars to me in hand paid by Charles Shenton of the County and State aforesaid have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell unto the aforesaid Charles Shenton his heirs and assigns forever one red brindle Cow & calf, one white pide Heifer, one dark brindle Heifer, one brindle Steer To have and to hold the above mentioned property unto the said said Charles Shenton his heirs and assigns to the only proper use benefit and behoof of the said Charles Shenton his heirs and assigns forever. Witness my hand and seal this 22.d day of November 1843 his Signed sealed & delivered in the presence of Levin x Adams (Seal) James Smith Thomas D. Keene mark Maryland Dorchester County To wit: on this 23.d day of November 1843 personally appeared Levin Adams before me the Subscriber a Justice of the Peace in and for the said County and acknowledged the above Bill of Sale to be his act and deed Acknowledged before James Smith |
