142 Dorchester County To wit On this 6th of July 1843 personally appeared before me the subscriber a justice of the peace for said county Sally Hawkins a free negro woman & acknowledged the foregoing instrument to be her act & deed Charles Corkran Cain Hurley Be it remembered that the following Bill of sale was Ex.d from recorded 6th July 1843 to wit Whereas in the Zorababel McCollister twenty third day of May in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and forty Two by order of the Judges of the orphans Court of Dorchester County in the state of Maryland I Zorababel McCollister adm.r of Plarmes McCollister Dec.d did at the Court house door in Cambridge in said County offer at public sale to the highest bidder certain negro girl named Maria and Cain Hurley of Dorchester County & state of Maryland became the highest bidder and purchaser for the sum of two hundred and twenty dollars Now to all whom it may concern be it Known that I Zorababel McCollister of County state aforesaid for and in consideration of the said sum of two hundred and twenty dollars to me in hand paid by the said Cain Hurley before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof I the said Zorababel McCollister do acknowledge do hereby grant bargain & sell unto the said Cain Hurley his executors administrators and assigns the aforesaid negro girl Maria To have and to hold the said negro girl Maria to the said Cain Hurley his executors administrators and assigns forever and I the said Zorababel McCollister for my self my heirs executors and administrators the said negro girl Maria unto the said Cain Hurley his executors administrators and assigns against me the said Zorababel McCollister my executors administrators and assigns and against all and every person or persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of June Eighteen hundred and forty three Witness Zorababel McCollister (seal) Joel Cornwell State of Maryland Dorchester county to wit Be it remembered that on this the 24th day of June 1843 before the subscriber a Justice of the peace in and for the county state aforesaid appears Zorababel McCollister and acknowledges the above bill of sale or instrument of writing to be his act and deed and that the property therein described is the property of Cain Hurley according to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided & the true intent and meaning of the same Joel Cornwell (seal) |
