Article 30 - Deaf, Mute or Blind
2A.
At any proceeding before any administrative or executive
board, committee, or any similar body provided by an employer,
employee organization, or union to hear employee grievances, a
deaf employee may request an interpreter upon 5 days' written
notice prior to the commencement of the proceeding. The
employer, employee organization, or union is obligated to inform
the deaf employee of this right in writing as soon as it is
possible or at least 8 days prior to the commencement of the
hearing. Should an interpreter then be requested by the
employee, the employer or the union or the employee organization
shall request the [Governor's] Office for [the Coordination of
Services to the] Handicapped INDIVIDUALS to assist in locating a
qualified interpreter to assist at the hearing. The interpreter
shall facilitate communication between the affected parties while
remaining bound by the accepted National Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf code of ethics. The [Governor's] Office for [the
Coordination of Services to the] Handicapped INDIVIDUALS shall
promptly assist in locating an interpreter. The cost of the
interpreter's services shall be divided equally between the
employer and the union or employee organization.
DRAFTER'S NOTE: This corrects an obsolete reference in
Article 30, § 2A.
The Governor's Office for the Coordination of Services
to the. Handicapped was replaced by the Office for
Handicapped Individuals in Ch. 295 of the Acts of
1984.
The obsolete reference was noted by the Administrative
Office of the Courts of Maryland.
