   on the back of the preceeding bill was Endorsed as folls vizt: true bill pr
                                                                     John Evans foreman—————
    And now at this Court Came the afd James Smith and in his proper person—
   appeared to the afd Indictment   And pleads not guilty and for tryall puts —
   himselfe on God and the Country       James Smith in proper person—
   And he who follows for the Lord Proprietarie in like manner Johnson -
   Thereupon Command was given to the Sherf of Kent County that he
   cause to come here Twelve &ca. By whome &ca. To Recognize &ca. Because as
   well &ca who neither &ca. And the Sherf comes and Saith that he hath~
   Ready twelve as Commanded who being called came as folls vizt Roger Hailes
   Richd Davis James Piner Oliver Palmer William Blackiston William
   Crow Thomas Joce Zachariah Mackdaniel Peter Cowarding Rice Jones .
   Junior John Williams Richard West who being duely Elected tryd & Sworn
   and having heard the Pleadings Evidences and allegations on both Sides do
   withdraw and after Some time do againe return to the barr and being calld
   over do appear as also the prisoner at the barr. and the Jurors afd being asked
   whether they are agreed on A vrerdict or not do say they are agreed and
   being Demanded whether they find The prisoner at the barr guilty or
   not guilty as he Stands indicted do say that they find the prisoner at the
   barr guilty as he Stands indicted and by Roger Hailes there foreman all
   so Say The Clarke of the Indictments prays Judgment on the verdict
   of the Jurors afd :   : Therefore it is Considered by the Court here vizt.
   this Twenty Second day of November Anno Domini one Thousand Seven
   hundred and Seventeen That the afd John Lux the person prosecutor —
   Recover against the afd James Smith as well the Sume of Six pounds
   Currant money the four fold of the goods as afd Stolen as also the Sume of
   thirty Shillings the money Stoln to be restored And also that the Sd
   James Smith to Stand two hours in ye Pillory and then to receive twenty
   nine Lashes on his bare back till the blood appear   As also to pay ye
   officers of this Court The Sume of Two Thousand and ninety^ninepounds of Tobacco
   ffees accruing on the premises afd -
    It is Considered by the Court here vizt. the Same day last mentioned that~
   Simon Wilmer Gent high Sherf of Said County take the afd Jam[es] Smith~
   into his Custody and putt him into the Pillory and there to [Stan]d as in~
   the Judgment afd and afterward to putt to the Common whyping [post[ and -
