                   I hereby certify that the bearer
       hereof Negro Mary Anne Steel who is
       known by that name (about thirty one years
       old four feet Eleven and a half Inches high
       having a scar on the left side of her head
       a little above the left year and a small one
       above her left Eye) is a free woman being
       the Daughter of Mary Gray a free born
       woman of colour

       aff.d fd among      In testimony whereof I
       papers                  have hereunto subscribed my

                I hereby certify that negro John who calls himself
       John Semmes the bearer hereof a very Black man about
       twenty four years of age five feet Eleven Inches high of
       Straight & Slender make has a small scar on the right
       Breast a small ^scar^ on the right Eye Brown & a small scar
       on the Second Joint of the left thumb that the said
          John Semmes is a free man and was born free
