A Senate Joint Resolution concerning
Alzheimer's Disease Month - Proclamation
FOR the purpose of requesting the Governor of the State to
declare the month of November in each year 1985 in each year
to be designated as the "Alzheimer's Disease Month".
WHEREAS, More than 2,000,000 Americans, including thousands
of Marylanders, are affected by Alzheimer's disease, which is a
surprisingly common disorder that destroys certain vital cells of
the brain; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the fourth leading cause of
death among older Americans; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is responsible for 50% of all
nursing home admissions, which represents an annual cost of more
than $20,000,000; and
WHEREAS, In one-third of all American families 1 parent will
succumb to this disease; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not a normal consequence of
aging; and
WHEREAS, An increase in the national and State awareness of
the problem of Alzheimer's disease may stimulate the interest and
concern of the American people, which may lead, in turn, to
increased research and eventually to the discovery of a cure for
Alzheimer's disease; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Governor is requested to designate the month of November in each
year 1985 each year as the "Alzheimer's Disease Month" and to
issue a proclamation each year each year that calls on the people
of Maryland to observe each the each month of November with
appropriate ceremonies programs and activities; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be forwarded by the
Department of Legislative Reference to the Honorable Harry
Hughes, Governor of Maryland, the Honorable Benjamin L. Cardin,
Speaker of the House of Delegates, and the Honorable Melvin A.
Steinberg, President of the Senate of Maryland.
