2538                                          LAWS OF MARYLAND                                     Ch. 488

[(2)](4) The State's Attorney's allowance for the
expenses of his office [is $3,000] SHALL BE AS BUDGETED BY

THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS.

[(3)](5) The State's Attorney may appoint one or
more assistants at a salary set by the County Commissioners.

SECTION 2- AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That, pursuant to
Article III, § 35, of the Constitution of Maryland, this Act may
not be construed to extend or apply to the salary or compensation
of the Somerset County State's Attorney in office on the
effective date of this Act, but the provisions of this Act
concerning the salary or compensation of the Somerset County
State's Attorney shall take effect at the beginning of the next
following term of office.

SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1985.

(House Bill 1714)

AN ACT concerning

Merit System - Fire Fighters

FOR the purpose of specifying that a "shift" is an 8-hour period
for the purpose of granting differential pay to State
employed fire fighters.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article 64A - Merit System

Section 27(d)

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1983 Replacement Volume and 1984 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

Article 64A - Merit System

27.

(d) (1) Extra compensation, to be known as shift
differential pay, shall be granted to designated employees.
