SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:

(w) (1) The Sheriff of Washington County shall receive a
salary of $23,000. He may appoint an office deputy at a salary
set by the County Commissioners. He may appoint the following
additional employees who shall receive not less than the salaries
indicated: two deputies--$2,400 and $50 per month each for the
use of their automobiles; one secretary--$l,800; a chief warden
of the jail--$2,400; an assistant warden--$2,100; an attorney to
the Sheriff--$600; and a cook--$l,800; additional special
deputies—same salary as deputies. Salaries set by this section,
except the Sheriff's salary are minimum salaries and may be
increased from time to time by the County Commissioners.
(2) Any deputy sheriff appointed according to this
section shall be placed on a probationary status for the first
year of his employment, and may be dismissed by the Sheriff for
any reason during that probationary period. At the conclusion of
twelve months continuous employment, a deputy sheriff having the
rank of [sergeant] LIEUTENANT or below has tenure, and may be
discharged by the Sheriff only for misfeasance, malfeasance,
nonfeasance, or insubordination in office.
SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act shall
take effect July 1, 1984.

AN ACT concerning
Washington County - Election Officials - Salary
FOR the purpose of altering the annual salary paid to the
President and each member of the Washington County Board of
Supervisors of Elections; and altering the compensation paid
to the chief judges of election and the election judges of
Washington County for each election day; and providing that
any increases in compensation may not be construed to extend
or apply to incumbent Washington County chief judges of
election and judges of election.
