FOR the purpose of providing an additional scholarship in a
certain amount to certain persons if the recipients enroll
in certain approved programs of teacher education; requiring
recipients to sign agreements to teach in a public school
for a certain time and to repay the State the amounts of the
additional scholarship and interest at a certain rate if the
recipient does not meet certain conditions; providing for
the adoption of certain rules and regulations relating to
the waiver of certain repayment requirements under certain
conditions; renumbering a certain section; deleting a
provision limiting the amount of an award to $800; and
generally relating to teacher education scholarships under
the distinguished scholar program.

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That the Laws of Maryland read as follows:
Article - Education
18-1102.
(D) (1) A RECIPIENT OF AN AWARD MADE UNDER THIS SECTION
SHALL RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL $800 FOR EACH YEAR IN WHICH THE
RECIPIENT IS ELIGIBLE IF THE RECIPIENT:
(1) (I) ENROLLS IN AN APPROVED PROGRAM OF TEACHER
EDUCATION AT AN ACCREDITED POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTION IN THE
STATE; AND
(2) (II) SIGNS AN AGREEMENT TO:
(I) 1. TEACH COMMENCE EMPLOYMENT AS A TEACHER
IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE STATE UPON WITHIN 9 MONTHS OF THE
COMPLETION OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES FOR 1 YEAR FOR EACH YEAR THAT
THE SCHOLARSHIP WAS AWARDED; AND
(II) 2. REPAY THE STATE THE ADDITIONAL AMOUNTS
AWARDED UNDER THIS SUBSECTION AND SIMPLE INTEREST EQUAL TO THE
PRIME RATE OF INTEREST PLUS 2 PERCENT IF THE RECIPIENT DOES NOT:
