No. 25

(House Joint Resolution No. 41)

A House Joint Resolution concerning

Increased State Support for Meharry Medical College

FOR the purpose of urging the Governor to increase funding for
Maryland students attending Meharry Medical College; and
urging the State Board for Higher Education to increase its
contract amount for Maryland students attending Meharry
Medical College under Southern Regional Education Board
contract.

WHEREAS, Meharry Medical College, in Nashville, Tennessee,
is the largest single educator of black health professionals in
the United States; and

WHEREAS, Forty percent of all black physicians and dentists
now practicing in the United, States are graduates of Meharry
Medical College; and

WHEREAS, Graduates of Meharry Medical College practice in 49
states and in many foreign countries; and

WHEREAS, In the past decade 75 percent of Meharry Medical
College graduates have developed practices that serve the poor in
the inner cities and in rural areas; and

WHEREAS, Meharry Medical College receives only nominal
support from the City of Nashville and the State of Tennessee;
and

WHEREAS, Meharry Medical College, because it is a
professional school, does not participate in the United Negro
College Fund; and

WHEREAS, The Southern Regional Education Board, of which the
State of Maryland is a member, organizes student contract
programs between participating states and schools in order to
reserve a minimum number of student spaces at each school for
each state; and

WHEREAS, Meharry Medical College currently reserves spaces
for Maryland students, for which Maryland pays $4,750 per student
per year; and

WHEREAS, It now costs Meharry Medical College $30,000 per
year to educate a student; and

WHEREAS, The Tennessee Higher Education Commission recently
voted to increase its contract amount for students attending
