       the bounds of the Land afd and to send their sev.ll Depositions under my
       Hand and seale to the Register of the said Court &c  I Certifie that on the
       seaventh day of August 1702 I called and caused to come before me upon
       the said Land called the four Square near the Fork of a Branch of Kings
       Creek betwixt the houres of Ten and Twelve the s.d Day a Certain Jn.o Nunam
       aged fifty years or upwards of sound Memory and understanding to whom
       Judgministred an oath upon the Holy Evangelist that he should speak the
       truth touching the bounds of the Land afd w.ch sd Jn.o Nunam Examined upon
       his Corporall Oath then and there did show to me and others hereafter Named
       and Old fallen Hiccory Tree long ago fallen and now when in such place on
       the Grant of the said Land doth describe and then and there before me and others
       demanded upon his Corporall oath afd did say that same Hiccory Tree was the first
       markt Tree of the afd 1000 Acres of Land called the four Square  And that
       he the sd Jn.o Nunam did mark the sd Hiccory in the p.rsence of William Helmsley
       then Surveyor for the very first Tree of the af.d 1000 Acres of Land called the
       four Square and by the speciall order and direction of the said surveyor and further
       said not and no other Wittnesses were produced  And because the s.d Hiccory
       was allmost wasted away Yet the Hole where the Root was being manifestly
       distinguishable  Therefore for more perfect continuance of the Exact
       bounds of the afd 1000 Acres of Land called the four Square ^in remembrance^ of the Exact
       which stood sixteen foot North and by West from the Center of the said Hole of
       the Root with four Notches on the South Side one right above another in
       p.rsence of the said Jn.o Nunam John Pitts William Coursey William Turbutt
       Joseph Nunam, William Neale, and Robert Gouldsborough

       Ann by the Grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland Defender of the
       Faith &c  To Thomas Smithson of Tallbot County Gen.t Greeting We have Nominated and
       appointed You our Com.r to Examin all such Witnesses as shall be to you proposed and nominated by
       sev.rll Inhabitants holding Lands joyning upon the bounds of the Land Baltemores Mannor on
       Choptank River in Tallbot County touching there y.e s.d Wittnesses Knowledge & Remembrance
       the outermost bounded Tree of the Mannor af.d  And therefore We Require you the said
       such time and place as to you shall seem meet you call and cause to come before You the
       s.d Wittnesses and y.t you examin them and every of them upon their Corporal oaths to
       you administred upon the Holy Evangelist touching their knowledge & remembrance in
       p.rmisses  And that reducing and the substance of their sev.rall and respective Depositions
       into writing you send the same together with this our Comission under your hands and seals written
       to the Register of our high Court of Chancery to be Recorded [in perpetuam Rei memoriam]
       to p.rvent Debates that runs else write by the death of all or any of the
