shall take effect July 1, 1982.

CHAPTER 876

(House Bill 1229)

AN ACT concerning

Merit System - Religious Observance

FOR the purpose of requiring the Secretary of Personnel to
promulgate rules and regulations providing for certain
work schedules so that a State employee can take off
time for religious observance and make up the time;
providing a method for the employee to make up the
time; providing for certain exceptions to this Act; and
defining certain terms.

Section 37B

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1979 Replacement Volume and 1981 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
read(s) as follows:

Article 64A - Merit System

37B.

(A)   IN THIS SECTION, THE FOLLOWING WORDS HAVE THE
MEANINGS INDICATED.

(1)   "AGENCY" MEANS ANY DEPARTMENT, AGENCY,
BOARD, COMMISSION, OR UNIT OF THE JUDICIAL, LEGISLATIVE, OR
EXECUTIVE BRANCHES.

(2)   "EMPLOYEE" MEANS A STATE EMPLOYEE,
CLASSIFIED OR UNCLASSIFIED, FULL TIME OR PART TIME, WHO IS
EMPLOYED BY ANY JUDICIAL, LEGISLATIVE, OR EXECUTIVE STATE
AGENCY.

(B)  (1) THE SECRETARY SHALL ADOPT RULES AND
REGULATIONS PROVIDING FOR WORK SCHEDULES WHERE AN EMPLOYEE,
WHOSE PERSONAL RELIGIOUS BELIEFS UNDER A RECOGNIZED RELIGION
