AN ACT concerning

Somerset County - Sheriff - Salary Increase

FOR the purpose of altering the salary of the Sheriff of
Somerset County; and providing that this Act does not
affect the incumbent Sheriff of Somerset County.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

Section 2-309(u)(l)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article - Courts and Judicial Proceedings

2-309.

(u) (1) The Sheriff of Somerset County shall receive a
salary of not less than [$10,000] $16,000 and no expense
allowance. He shall appoint a chief deputy who shall
receive a salary of not less than $7,500. Subject to the
approval of the County Commissioners, the Sheriff may
appoint additional deputies at the compensation set by the
County Commissioners prior to any appointment. The Sheriff
or one of his deputies shall act as county jailer and shall
receive annual total compensation of not less than $6,000.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
may not be construed to extend or apply to the salary of the
Sheriff of Somerset County in office on the effective date
of this Act, but the provisions of this Act concerning the
salary of the Sheriff of Somerset County shall take effect
at the beginning of the next following term of office.

SECTION 3. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1981.
