EMERGENCY LIGHTING AND ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS FOR BUILDINGS
58.

(A)  ANY PUBLIC BUILDING OR STRUCTURE OWNED BY THE
STATE OR ITS SUBDIVISIONS, AND ANY HOTEL, APARTMENT
BUILDING, MULTIPLE DWELLING, LODGING HOUSE, HOSPITAL,
NURSING HOME, DORMITORY, OR SCHOOL OR COLLEGE EDUCATIONAL
BUILDING, MONASTERY OR CONVENT HAVING A POTENTIAL EVENING
OCCUPANCY OF MORE THAN 25 PERSONS AND HAVING AT LEAST FOUR
STORIES, EXCLUDING ATTICS, AND BASEMENTS, AND BELOW GROUND
LEVEL FLOORS, SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH AN ADEQUATE EMERGENCY
ELECTRICAL POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM, SEPARATE FROM THE REGULAR
ELECTRIC LIGHTING AND POWER SYSTEM, WHICH WILL OPERATE
AUTOMATICALLY UPON THE OCCURANCE OF A FAILURE OF THE
REGULAR SOURCE OF ELECTRIC POWER POWER AND LIGHTING IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 101 (THE NATIONAL LIFE SAFETY CODE).

(B)  THE AUTHORITY FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF THIS
SECTION IS VESTED IN THE STATE FIRE PREVENTION COMMISSION
AND THE AUTHORITY FOR THE ENFORCEMENT OF THIS SECTION IS
VESTED IN THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL. THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL
SHALL ENFORCE THE PROVISIONS OF THIS SECTION AND THE RULES
AND REGULATIONS ADOPTED BY THE STATE FIRE COMMISSION SO THAT
PERSONS ON THE PREMISES ARE REASONABLY PROTECTED IN THE
EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY.

(C)  THE STATE FIRE PREVENTION COMMISSION SHALL ADOPT
RULES AND REGULATIONS NECESSARY TO ENFORCE THIS SECTION.

(D)  THE RULES AND REGULATIONS SHALL INCLUDE, BUT ARE
NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

(1)  EMERGENCY ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS IN ACCORDANCE
WITH NFPA 101 (THE NATIONAL LIFE SAFETY CODE) ARE REQUIRED,
DURING OUTAGES OR BLOCKAGES OF REGULAR SERVICES, TO FURNISH
SUFFICIENT LIGHT IN HALLS, CORRIDORS, ROOMS, AND STAIRWAYS,
AND AT LEAST ONE ELEVATOR IS REQUIRED TO FACILITATE THE
MOVEMENT OF PERSONS IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. THERE
SHALL BE SUFFICIENT EXIT SIGNS AND DIRECTORIES TO EXIT SIGNS
ADEQUATELY LIGHTED FOR THE GUIDANCE OF THE PERSONS ON THE
PREMISES.

(2)  EMERGENCY ELECTRICAL POWER SUFFICIENT TO
OPERATE ELEVATORS AND ELECTRICAL FACILITIES IN HOSPITAL
OPERATING ROOMS, HOSPITAL X-RAYS, AND OTHER EMERGENCY
EQUIPMENT NECESSARY TO THE PROPER OPERATION OF MEDICAL
SERVICES IN HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES IS REQUIRED. THE
SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND MENTAL HYGIENE SHALL BE CONSULTED AS
TO THE REQUIREMENTS THAT SHOULD BE MADE IN THE OPERATIONS OF
HOSPITALS AND NURSING HOMES. IN MAKING THIS EVALUATION, THE
SECRETARY SHALL CONSIDER THE SIZE AND NATURE OF THE
PARTICULAR HOSPITAL OR NURSING HOME OPERATION.

(3)  ADEQUATE EMERGENCY ELECTRIC LIGHTING IN
ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 101 (THE NATIONAL LIFE SAFETY CODE) OF
