Preamble

WHEREAS, Government House, the official residence of
the Governor, holds a significant place in the artistic
heritage of Maryland; and

WHEREAS, Over the course of the last 100 years an
inconsistent, if not conflicting, variety of furnishings,
paintings, and decorative arts have been acquired, at State
expense, for the State rooms of Government House; and

WHEREAS, Government House holds the significant
potential for providing its thousands of annual visitors, at
no increased cost to the taxpayer, a unique opportunity to
expand their knowledge of Maryland's rich history and the
work of her artists and craftsmen, past and present; and

WHEREAS, The Governor and the First Lady have
undertaken, with the technical assistance of the Maryland
Historical Society and funding from nonpublic sources
through the Friends of Government House, Inc., a unique and
beneficial program for the renovation of the State rooms of
Government House for such educational and cultural
purposes; and

WHEREAS, The continued adequate funding of such
renovations from nonpublic sources requires that the
furnishing and decor of the State rooms of Government House
be committed, in trust for the People of Maryland, to an
authority which is independent of the personal preferences
of any occupant of Government House; now, therefore,

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:
