Death Certificates

FOR the purpose of requiring a certain person to complete
the certificate of death when the deceased individual's
body is sent to the Anatomy Board.

BY repealing and reenacting, with amendments,

Article 43 - Health

Section 20(a)

Annotated Code of Maryland

(1971 Replacement Volume and 1978 Supplement)

SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, That section(s) of the Annotated Code of Maryland
be repealed, amended, or enacted to read as follows:

Article 43 - Health

20.

(a) (1) The certificate of death shall be filled
out and signed within 24 hours after death by the physician
last in attendance upon the deceased, except in those cases
where the medical examiner takes charge of the corpse, in
which case the certificate shall be executed by him. The
physician or the medical examiner shall include only the
following information on the certificate of death:

[(1)] (I) The name of the deceased;

[(2)] (II) The cause of death; medical
certification;

[(3)] (III) The date and hour of death;

[(4)] (IV) The place where death occurred.

(2) All other information that is required on
the certificate of death shall be executed by the funeral
director or that person who is in charge of the remains of
the body. HOWEVER, IF AN UNCLAIMED BODY OR DONATED BODY IS
SENT TO THE ANATOMY BOARD, THE INFORMATION REQUIRED IN THIS
PARAGRAPH SHALL BE FILLED OUT BY A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE
HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME ADMINISTRATOR, MEDICAL EXAMINER,
FUNERAL DIRECTOR, OR OTHER PERSON LAST IN CHARGE OF THE BODY
BEFORE IT IS SENT TO THE ANATOMY BOARD.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1979.
