per year. [The Sheriff shall appoint 20 full-time deputy
sheriffs, one as chief deputy, two as investigators, and one
as chief jailer. The starting salary of the chief deputy,
the investigators, and the chief jailer is $8,800 and their
maximum salary is $11,300. The starting salary for the
remaining 16 deputy sheriffs is $8,000 and their maximum
salary is $10,500. Each deputy shall receive annual
increments of $400 after the first year of service, $500
after the second, third, and fourth years, and $600 after
the fifth year. Each deputy may not receive the first year
increment of $400 prior to the completion of one full year
of service. Increments shall begin the July 1 of each year
in which they are effective. The treasurer shall certify
the salaries and annual increments of this subsection.] THE
SHERIFF SHALL APPOINT NOT LESS THAN 22 FULL-TIME DEPUTY
SHERIFFS. OF THE DEPUTIES, ONE SHALL BE CHIEF DEPUTY WHOSE
STARTING ANNUAL SALARY SHALL BE NOT LESS THAN $10,500 AND
WHOSE MAXIMUM SALARY, THROUGH SCHEDULED STEPS AS PROVIDED BY
THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, SHALL BE $16,000. THERE SHALL BE
TWO INVESTIGATORS, DESIGNATED AS INVESTIGATOR I AND
INVESTIGATOR II AND THERE SHALL BE A CHIEF JAILER.
INVESTIGATOR I SHALL HAVE A STARTING ANNUAL SALARY OF NOT
LESS THAN $10,500 AND A MAXIMUM SALARY, THROUGH SCHEDULED
STEPS AS PROVIDED BY THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, OF $16,000.
INVESTIGATOR II AND THE CHIEF JAILER SHALL HAVE STARTING
ANNUAL SALARIES OF NOT LESS THAN $10,000 AND MAXIMUM
SALARIES, THROUGH SCHEDULED STEPS AS PROVIDED BY THE COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS, OF $15,500. THE REMAINING DEPUTIES SHALL BE

CLASSIFIED AS DEPUTY I - LAW ENFORCEMENT, DEPUTY II--

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER, AND DEPUTY III CIVIL PROCESS AND

COURT ROOM SECURITY, AND THEY SHALL RECEIVE A STARTING
ANNUAL SALARY OF NOT LESS THAN $9,500 AND A MAXIMUM SALARY,
THROUGH SCHEDULED STEPS AS PROVIDED BY THE COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF $15,000. THE DEPUTIES IN EACH OF THESE
CLASSIFICATIONS SHALL BE CERTIFIED IN TRAINING AT THE
RESPECTIVE ACADEMIES OR SCHOOLS. OF THE REMAINING DEPUTIES,
NO LESS THAN SEVEN SHALL BE CLASSIFIED AS JAILER. If any
deputy resigns or is fired and subsequently is rehired as a
deputy, he may either be paid as if he were hired for the
first time or receive credit for previous service.

(2)  Any person, other than the Sheriff,
enumerated in paragraph (1) who has completed successfully a
program in law enforcement training, OR CORRECTIONAL OFFICER

TRAINING, OR CIVIL PROCESS - COURT ROOM SECURITY TRAINING,

recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission or has
reached the age of 35 with five years service shall receive
$500 annually in addition to the salary provided in
paragraph (1).

(3)  The County Commissioners shall furnish the
Sheriff's office with not less than [seven] NINE
automobiles, and shall pay all necessary operating expenses
including but not limited to, gasoline, oil, insurance, and
repairs. The marked automobiles shall be replaced every two
years and the unmarked automobiles shall be replaced every
three years, OR AT THE SHERIFF'S DECISION WITH THE APPROVAL
