LAWS OF MARYLAND

Ch. 22

SHALL BE APPOINTED SOLELY BECAUSE OF HIS CHARACTER AND
FITNESS, INTEREST IN THE CAUSE OF PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION,
AND KNOWLEDGE OF ITS PROBLEMS.

(4) EXCEPT FOR THE STUDENT MEMBER, A MEMBER MAY
NOT BE APPOINTED WHO IS SUBJECT TO THE AUTHORITY OF THE
BOARD IN ANY WAY.

(C)   STUDENT MEMBER - TERM AND SELECTION.

(1)    THE STUDENT MEMBER SHALL BE APPOINTED FOR A
TERM OF 1 YEAR, BEGINNING ON JULY 1.

(2)   THE STUDENT MEMBER SHALL BE APPOINTED FROM
THE INSTITUTIONS IN THE ORDER IN WHICH THE INSTITUTIONS WERE
CHARTERED.

(D)   NONSTUDENT MEMBERS - TERM; VACANCIES.

(1)    EXCEPT FOR THE STUDENT MEMBER, EACH MEMBER
SERVES FOR A TERM OF 5 YEARS AND UNTIL A SUCCESSOR IS
APPOINTED AND QUALIFIES. THESE TERMS ARE STAGGERED AS
REQUIRED BY THE TERMS OF THE MEMBERS SERVING ON JULY 1,
1978.

(2)    A MEMBER APPOINTED TO FILL A VACANCY IN AN
UNEXPIRED TERM SERVES ONLY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THAT TERM
AND UNTIL A SUCCESSOR IS APPOINTED AND QUALIFIES.

(3)    EXCEPT FOR THE STUDENT MEMBER, A MEMBER MAY
BE REAPPOINTED BUT MAY NOT SERVE FOR MORE THAN TWO FULL
TERMS, INCLUDING A TERM THAT STARTED BEFORE JULY 1, 1971.

(4)     NOTWITHSTANDING PARAGRAPH (1) OF THIS
SUBSECTION, THE TERM OF ANY MEMBER SERVING AS OF JUNE 30,
1976 REMAINS UNCHANGED UNTIL IT EXPIRES.

(E)       COMPENSATION.

EACH MEMBER OF THE BOARD:

(1)   SERVES WITHOUT COMPENSATION; AND

(2)   IS ENTITLED TO REIMBURSEMENT FOR EXPENSES IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE STANDARD STATE TRAVEL REGULATIONS.

REVISOR'S NOTE: This section presently appears as Art.
77A, §11(b), (c), and (d).

In subsection (c) of this section, the proviso
that the student member's term is 1 year "unless
the tern terminates sooner ..." is deleted as
unnecessary.

In subsection (d) of this section, the present
references to the "incumbent public members of
the board as of June 30, 1976" are deleted in
favor of a provision continuing their current
